On what was meant to be the final day of the 12th session of Working Group II (WGII-12) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), delegates continued working through the text of the Summary for Policymakers of the WGII contribution to the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report (AR6), moving towards the finish line of finalizing the SPM.

Gathering in plenary sessions, contact groups, and “huddles” throughout the day, the Working Group took up most of the sections of the SPM, focusing specifically on paragraphs, subsections, and figures that had not yet been approved. As delegates reached agreement on text in contact groups and huddles, with input and guidance from the authors, text was forwarded to plenary for approval by the Working Group. Three plenary sessions, three contact groups, and several huddles were held to facilitate this process, considering, inter alia:

  • vulnerability and exposure of ecosystems and people;
  • near to mid-term risks;
  • mid- to long-term risks;
  • climate-resilient development;
  • current adaptation and its benefits; and
  • limits to adaptation.

The Working Group is expected to consider and approve all outstanding paragraphs on Saturday, and thus enable the 55th Session of the IPCC to reconvene and accept the actions taken by the Working Group.
