The 22nd meeting of the Plants Committee (PC22) of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) reconvened in Tbilisi, Georgia on 20 October 2015. During the morning, participants convened for a brief plenary session addressing the revised nomenclature of two species of Malagasy palms, and an amendment of the annotation for Appendix II orchids to exempt finished products packaged and ready for retail trade, which contain components of Appendix II orchids. Participants then broke into two working groups: one addressing non-detriment findings (NDFs) for Pericopsis elata (African teak) and Bulnesia sarmientoi (Holy wood), and the harvesting of and trade in Prunus africana (African cherry); and the second addressing the periodic review of species included in CITES Appendices I and II.
The afternoon session saw the first working group continue its work on NDFs and Prunus africana. Following its conclusion, the working group on the Review of Significant Trade (RST) convened. In the evening, a small group discussed terms of reference for an intersessional working group on analysing the potential risks and/or benefits of an exemption for orchid components.
Side events on guidance on making NDFs and on technical assistance by the International Trade Centre for CITES Parties also took place.
