 Nineteenth Meeting of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) Plants Committee (PC)

Highlights for Monday, 18 April 2011

 John Scanlon, CITES Secretary-General, opened the 19th meeting of the CITES Plants Committee (PC 19) on 18 April 2011. He emphasized relationships with other international conventions and processes; the relevance of the International Year of Forests for the Convention’s work on timber; the increasing use of Appendix III by parties; and the need to simplify annotations. The Committee elected Margarita Clemente (Spain) as PC 19 Chair, and Hesiquio Benitez (Mexico) as Vice-Chair by acclamation. Noting the heavy agenda of the meeting, Chair Clemente drew the Committee’s attention to non-detriment findings (NDF), annotations, and the periodic review, among others.
Plenary addressed organizational matters and established 12 working groups, including on: the PC work plan; NDF; annotations; the review of significant trade in Appendix II species; and the periodic review of plant species included in the CITES Appendices. The working groups are expected to convene the whole day on Tuesday and on Wednesday morning.
