Highlights and images for 30 July 2021

On the fifth day, delegates continued their consideration of the Summary for Policymakers of the Working Group I (WG I) contribution to the Sixth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

Two plenary sessions took place during the day. The first session addressed a subsection on the range of equilibrium climate sensitivity and a subsection on the effects of reductions in CO2 and non-CO2 emissions. Both subsections were taken up in plenary for the first time. Subsequently, authors met to discuss comments from delegates and reflect on how best to respond to them.

The second plenary session focused on a subsection on human influence on the climate system and another subsection on changes in “climatic impact-drivers,” which are physical climate system conditions that affect an element of society or ecosystems. The plenary session started with reports on discussions held in a huddle and in a contact group, before engaging in paragraph-by-paragraph consideration of the subsections. 

Two contact group sessions also took place during the day, respectively addressing a subsection on global surface temperature increase in the near term and a subsection on what is required, from a physical science perspective, to limit human-induced global warming.
