The 61st meeting of the Standing Committee (SC) of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) opened today in Geneva, Switzerland. SC Chair, Øystein Størkersen, underscored the need to attract financial resources, including Global Environment Facility (GEF) funds. John Scanlon, CITES Secretary-General, highlighted achievements since the fifteenth Conference of the Parties (CoP15), including the restructuring of the Secretariat; the relationship with the UN Environment Programme, and the launch of the International Consortium on Combating Wildlife Crime. He acknowledged challenges such as the high number of parties lacking legislation complying with the Convention and of parties subject to trade suspensions and the low level of submissions of national reports. Referring to the CITES Strategic Vision, he underscored the importance to reach out to other international processes and organizations, and stressed that with the UN 2012 Conference on Sustainable Development and the celebration of the 40 years of entry into force of CITES in 2013, it is the right time for raising CITES' profile in the political agenda.
Participants then tackled a heavy agenda, including documents related to the relationship with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), meetings of the CoP, financial matters and CITES Strategic Vision. |
