The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) initiated work on its Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) in 2015. After years of work and a delay caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the IPCC met to approve the Summary for Policymakers (SPM) of Working Group III. As one of three working groups contributing to AR6, Working Group III focuses on mitigating climate change. This interdisciplinary group of scientific experts assesses methods for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and removing greenhouse gases from the atmosphere. It addresses all aspects of mitigation, including technical feasibility, cost, and the “enabling environments” that would allow measures to be taken up, including, for example, policy instruments, governance options, and social acceptability.

During this session, the IPCC met to accept the underlying scientific technical assessment and approve the Summary for Policymakers (SPM) of the Working Group III contribution to the Sixth Assessment Report. Delegates engaged in line-by-line discussions of the draft SPM. The WGIII Co-Chairs and authors of the draft SPM responded to questions and comments and provided input and feedback as delegates systematically reviewde the text. After WGIII approved the draft SPM and accepted the underlying assessment, thereby concluding its agenda, IPCC-56 convened to accept the actions taken during WGIII-14.

IPCC-56 and WGIII-14 took place from 21 March to 1 April 2022. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, this meeting was held online.
