About
Amid a global pandemic and a triple planetary crisis of climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss, there was a renewed sense of urgency around “implementation, implementation, implementation” at the Stockholm+50 conference, predicated on fairness and inclusion.

Stockholm+50 will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the watershed UN Conference on the Human Environment, which took place in Stockholm in June 1972. Addressing intergenerational responsibility, implementation opportunities, and recognizing the interconnectivity among all relevant stakeholders and policy issues, this high-level meeting follows months of consultations and discussions with individuals, communities, organizations, and governments around the world, with a special focus on youth participation.
The conference aims to contribute to the environmental dimension of sustainable development by accelerating implementation of commitments in the context of the Decade of Action and delivery for sustainable development, including delivery of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals, the Paris Agreement on climate change, the post-2020 global biodiversity framework, and a green recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Stockholm+50, hosted by the Government of Sweden with support from the Government of Kenya, was called for by the United Nations General Assembly in resolution 75/280. Preparations include inputs from the resumed fifth session of the UN Environment Assembly and the first special session of the UN Environment Assembly for the commemoration of the fiftieth anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
The General Assembly organized collaborative and multi-stakeholder discussions in preparation for three leadership dialogues in Stockholm on:
- the urgent need for actions to achieve a healthy planet and prosperity for all;
- achieving a sustainable and inclusive recovery from the coronavirus pandemic; and
- accelerating the implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development in the context of the decade of action and delivery for sustainable development.
Stockholm+50 Secretary-General Inger Andersen, UNEP Executive Director, has called for a “new compass for welfare” as the world rethinks measures of progress and wellbeing. Along these lines, the leadership dialogues will form a core part of the Stockholm+50 meeting. They are expected to contribute to clear and concrete recommendations for action at all levels, including through strengthened cooperation on the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals
Side events and other parallel meetings will be organized during the same hours as the plenary meetings and dialogues.
Stockholm+50 will convene in Stockholm, Sweden from 2-3 June 2022. All countries have been invited to include youth representatives in their delegations.
In the lead up to Stockholm+50, the Earth Negotiations Bulletin team combined their unique vantage points on global environmental negotiations with their individual subject matter expertise to explore the "lessons learned" in the past 50 years of sustainable development efforts. The Still Only One Earth policy brief series not only considers the progress or regress on critical challenges, but also the deep links between issues facing people and the planet. The series concludes with a final brief the day before Stockholm+50 opens.
