All coverage

Ten years after its initial launch in 2011 at the 10th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP 10), the Rio Conventions Pavilion (RCP) has dedicated 2021 and 2022 to convene a forum to address the critical juncture the planet is facing with respect to climate change, biodiversity loss, and land degradation. The RCP will convene for six days, hosting several events during the UN Biodiversity Conference, which is meeting in Montréal, Canada through 19 December 2022.

RCP events will draw out the interlinkages between the post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework, the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, Food Systems Transformation, and the contribution of biodiversity protection to climate objectives. Speakers will include the Executive Secretaries of the three Rio Conventions, government representatives, and other stakeholders who will share their expert perspectives on the daily themes of the Pavilion.

The Pavilion will also invite a discussion examining the synergies between concurrent activities, global commitments, and summits such as the first part of the 15th meeting of the COP to the CBD (CBD COP 15 Part 1), the recent UN Climate Change Conference in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, the Stockholm+50 Summit, and the Sustainable Development Goals.

13 December: Restoration Day

Sessions will focus on issues addressed by the UN Decade for Ecosystem Restoration Task Forces: best practices; youth; monitoring; science and traditional knowledge; and finance.

14 December: Food Day

Presentations and discussions will explore how cross-cutting policy responses and global agreements work hand-in-hand with on-the-ground actions and economic drivers and realities. Participants will also consider how the UNCCD Land Degradation Neutrality targets, Nationally Determined Contributions under the Pairs Agreement, and the post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework tie into the theme.

15 December: Scenarios for Transformative Change

The morning session on 15 December will address what is transformative change and how the processes associated with it can achieve nature positive development. Participants will further examine how the post-2020 global biodiversity framework can contribute to the transformative change needed for nature and people.

15 December: Nature-based Climate Solutions

The morning session on 16 December will explore how the mainstreaming of an ecosystem-based approach in adaptation and development strategies can reduce the impacts of climate change.

16 December: Ocean Science and the Climate, Biodiversity and Restoration Agendas

The afternoon session on 16 December will draw on the diverse perspectives from scientists, governments, business and industry, philanthropic foundations, and UN agencies to advance a better understanding on how scientific knowledge can secure a healthy and sustainable Ocean.

16 December: Data in Support of Decision-making

During the afternoon session on 15 December, participants will consider how data can inform stakeholders to identify actions that prioritize  nature and help realize the ambitions of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework.

17 December: Finance and Risk Assessment for Climate, Biodiversity and Land Restoration

This event will focus on how transparency and more developed global standards on corporate and financial biodiversity and climate disclosure as a critical area for obtaining the overall UN agendas on which the Pavilion is centered on.

18 December: Synergies Day

Wrapping up the thematic days of the Pavilion, discussions will focus on how scaling up ambitions can be done and what are some key points that can be drawn from the Rio Conventions Pavilion held since 2021.

The Rio Conventions Pavilion will run from 13 to 18 December. The Earth Negotiations Bulletin will be providing a daily summary and images on this page beginning on 13 December.
