UN General Assembly Negotiations on the Post-2015 Development Agenda

The intergovernmental negotiations on the “post-2015 development agenda” were mandated by the UN General Assembly (UNGA) in September 2013. The UNGA also called for linkages between this new development agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which had been mandated by the 2012 UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20).

The SDGs were drafted by an Open Working Group, which held 13 meetings from March 2013 to July 2014. The Group adopted a report containing 17 SDGs and 169 targets, and submitted the proposal to the UNGA for consideration and action at its 68th session. A subsequent series of eight week-long sessions convened in 2015 to prepare the outcome of the UN Summit.

The final package, titled “Transforming Our World: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development,” includes the SDGs and was adopted in September 2015 by the UN Sustainable Development Summit. The 2030 Agenda is a commitment to eradicate poverty and achieve worldwide sustainable development by 2030, ensuring no one is left behind.
