Final Session of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD) and Inaugural Session of the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF)

The 20th and final session of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD-20) will meet on Friday, 20 September 2013 at UN Headquarters in New York. The CSD was established by the UN General Assembly in December 1992 to ensure effective follow-up of United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), also known as the Earth Summit.

At the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) in June 2012, Member States agreed to establish the High-level Political Forum to replace the CSD. In resolution 67/203 of 21 December 2012 the UN General Assembly decided that the CSD would have its last session immediately prior to the convening of the first meeting of the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development in order to ensure a smooth institutional transition.

The final session of the CSD, which will convene from 10:00 am – 1:00 pm will feature a discussion of lessons learned.

The first session of the HLPF, which will convene on Tuesday, 24 September 2013 at 3:00 pm will be of an inaugural nature. The outcome of the meeting will consist of a President's Summary.

IISD RS will be producing limited web coverage and a summary of each meeting.
