ITTC-42 Highlights: Monday, 7 May 2007 The forty-second session of the International Tropical Timber Council (ITTC) and the Associated Sessions of the four Committees (Finance and Administration; Economic Information and Market Intelligence; Forest Industry; and Reforestation and Forest Management) convened in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea on Monday, 7 May, and will continue their meetings until Saturday, 12 May 2007. The Council is considering a wide range of issues, including: forest law enforcement and governance in the context of sustainable tropical timber trade; inclusion of additional timber species under CITES; and developments in the UNFCCC related to forests and their potential implications for tropical forests and the world tropical timber economy.

Morning Session
Ambassador Luis Macchiavello Amoroz, ITTC-42 Chair, stated that major issues to be discuss at this session include the selection of a new Executive Secretary and the ratification of ITTA, 2006 by all relevant governments.
Greenpeace clarified their position regarding forest destruction.
Afternoon Session
Joint Committee Session: On Monday, Joint Committee Chair Chantal Adingra, Côte D’Ivoire, introduced the provisional agendas of the Committees on Economic Information and Market Intelligence, Forest Industry and Reforestation and Forest Management.
Adjumane Aime Kadio, Forest Development Society, Côte D’Ivoire, gave a presentation on an industrial teak plantation project and the use of cloning, noting that the savannah component of the project had to be abandoned due to civil conflict.
Delegates heard reports of completed projects and pre-projects during the meeting of the Committee on Economic Information and Market Intelligence and the Committee on Forest Industry chaired by Chantal Adingra, Côte D’Ivoire, and the Committee on Forest Industry (CFI), chaired by Dani Pitoyo, Indonesia.
In the evening, Patrick Pruaitch, Minister of Forests, PNG, hosted a reception and cultural performance, and launched a new book by Arnold Mundua titled "Elep Returns" , a story written from the perspective of a tree, that gets turned in to paper.
