The second day of the Low-Emissions Solutions Conference convened in Marrakech, Morocco, on 15 November 2016. Held on the sidelines of the 22nd session of the Conference of the Parties of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC COP22), the conference discussed issues around sustainable cities and built environments, and low-carbon transport.

In the morning, participants addressed sustainable cities and the built environment through panel discussions on: local climate action: strategies and implementation; smart low carbon and sustainable cities; and sustainable construction: energy efficiency and sustainable materials. These panel discussions aimed to enhance understanding of the role that cities play in global climate action. Panelists also assessed different approaches for creating “smart cities” and the challenges and opportunities this presents for low-carbon development. The final morning panel provided an overview of progress and innovation in sustainable materials, construction innovations, increased energy efficiency, and adaptation and resilience in the built environment.

In the afternoon, participants addressed low-carbon transport. Sessions on this topic included: introduction to mobility challenges and innovation in the transport sector; electric and hydrogen mobility; low-carbon fuels; and low-carbon freight and shipping. These panels addressed how to innovate in and transform the transport sector in moving towards low-carbon and zero net emission economies. They investigated innovations in electric and fuel cell vehicles, and explored options for scaling up deployment, including across the maritime and aviation sectors. The panels also explored sustainable liquid fuels and the least emitting means of shipping, and reviewed the challenges and solutions to decarbonizing freight on a global scales.
