On Tuesday, ICP-20 delegates resumed informal consultations through discussion panels on the meeting theme “Ocean Science and the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.”In the morning, Co-Chair Pennelope Althea Beckles (Trinidad and Tobago) moderated a second panel on “Scope and Uses of, and Gaps in, Ocean Science.” Panelists discussed, inter alia:

  • the application of science for ocean management in the UN Decade including for: coastal zone management and adaptation, regional and national capacity development planning, and early warning systems;
  • the role of ocean science in the blue economy, and contributions of blue socio-economic infrastructure to improved ocean protection;
  • the utilization of global ocean-observation systems to ensure science-based sustainable development; and
  • the work of the Joint Group of Experts on the Scientific Aspects of Marine Environmental Protection (GESAMP) in providing advice to the UN on a variety of marine environmental protection issues.
  • In the afternoon, delegates participated in a panel discussion on “International Cooperation and Coordination in Advancing Ocean Science and Addressing Related Gaps.” Discussions topics included, inter alia:

  • the work of SpeSeas on ocean research, education, and advocacy to overcome barriers in marine exploration in Trinidad and Tobago;
  • approaches and initiatives in the Pacific to address capacity-building needs through postgraduate programs, and information sharing through the Pacific Ocean Portal;
  • capacity building activities in the education sector in Sri Lanka carried out by Ocean University, including degree programs and training and awareness; and
  • capacity building as a crosscutting issue for the UN Decade, including specific requirements such as training and human resource development, financing, and transfer of knowledge and technologies.
  • During the afternoon break, delegates attended a side event on “Interdisciplinarity and Equity” where a panel of young scientists offered insights on transformative approaches to science for sustainable development.

    IISD Reporting Services, through its Earth Negotiations Bulletin (ENB) meeting coverage, provided daily web updates from the 20th Meeting of the UN Open-ended Informal Consultative Process on Oceans and the Law of the Sea.
