|
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) convened in Batumi, Georgia, today for the commencement of its 37th session. The session opened with an inspiring performance by a troupe of young Georgian dancers and with welcoming statements by the Chairperson of the Parliament of Georgia, the Georgian Minister of Environment and Natural Resources Protection, and the Head of Government of the Autonomous Republic of Adjara.
On its first day, the Panel made quick progress towards the acceptance of the 2013 Wetlands Supplement to the 2006 IPCC Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories, and addressed various matters related to the IPCC’s communications strategy and outreach activities. Participants also discussed reducing the carbon footprint of IPCC activities, and had its financial task team initiate its review of the IPCC programme and budget.
On the agenda for the coming days are items including the future of the IPCC and the acceptance of the 2013 Revised Supplementary Methods and Good Practice Guidance arising from the Kyoto Protocol, related to land use, land-use change and forestry (LULUCF).
At the end of IPCC-37’s first day, IPCC Chair Rajendra Pachauri highlighted the great progress that participants had already achieved and participants left the conference centre feeling that the day was a good start to the session.
