Highlights for Wednesday, 9 July 2014

The CITES Standing Committee continued discussions on elephants on Wednesday morning. The Committee discussed the preparation of a background document on the Decision-making mechanism for authorizing ivory trade to be considered by the relevant inter-sessional Working Group.

In the afternoon, the Secretariat introduced the report on review of significant trade (RST), highlighting that several aloe, Euphorbia and palm species have been removed from the RTS. Participants discussed mahogany and rosewood after hearing reports from the Secretariat, Madagascar and The World Bank, including a proposal for an interim plan to sell off stockpiles of seized timber. Some expressed concern over the proposed sale given that the necessary audit has not been completed and approved.

The working day ended with a discussion on rhino and enforcement matters, including for pangolins. The Secretariat’s report on enforcement shows that there is an increasing number of seizures of illegal consignments of pangolin specimens from Africa, illustrating that the problem is an international one, beyond Asian pangolin range States.
