14th Meeting of the Open-ended Working Group of the Basel Convention
To prepare for the next meeting of the Conference of the Parties, delegates grappled with challenges in regulating the movement of transboundary waste. This requires a common understanding of what counts as waste as definitions continue to change as technology advances.
Organizational Meeting of the Preparatory Commission for the Entry Into Force of the BBNJ Agreement and the Convening of the 1st Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Agreement
Discussions over the work programme took up most of the three-day meeting, with a focus on governance and financial issues to be addressed by the Conference of the Parties once the Agreement enters into force. The next meeting is expected to be in April 2025.
3rd Meeting of the Ad Hoc Open-ended Working Group on a Science-Policy Panel to Contribute Further to the Sound Management of Chemicals and Waste and to Prevent Pollution
Delegates were expected to make significant progress in establishing the scientific foundations for better management of chemicals and waste. However, they were unable to reach consensus on the “foundational document” outlining the basic structure of the science-policy panel.
