The Workshop continued on Tuesday with technical sessions addressing two remaining areas of a Master Planning Matrix, namely, protected area management effectiveness assessment and sustainable finance. In the morning, participants heard presentations on protected area management effectiveness evaluation and case studies from South Africa, Rwanda and Finland. Following interactive sessions to assess country-level evaluations, participants convened in country groups to discuss the status, obstacles and challenges, next steps and support needed for increasing the effectiveness of protected area management.
In the afternoon, participants heard presentations on sustainable financial planning and mechanisms, and case studies from Madagascar, including on the establishment of a Trust Fund for protected areas, and engaged in an interactive session where they completed a matrix on options for sustainable financing. During ensuing country group discussions, many participants noted limited progress towards establishing sustainable financing and identified next steps including exploring sustainable finance options and forming stronger links with experts.
