“The effective implementation of the Montreal Protocol and the Kigali Amendment will go down in history as having put humanity back on track to a peaceful and sustainable future.” Those were the words of Inger Andersen, Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), on the last day of the combined twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (Part II) of the Vienna Convention and thirty-third Meeting of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol (COP 12(II)/MOP 33).

Cheikh Ndiaye Sylla, COP 12 President, opened the High-Level Segment, where delegates elected the meeting officials, including Simeon Sawadogo, Minister of Environment, Green Economy and Climate Change, Burkina Faso, as President of MOP 33.

The preparatory segment opened briefly, to allow delegates to hear the report of the contact group on energy efficiency. Contact group co-facilitator Patrick McInerney (Australia) reported that the group had finalized it work. OEWG 43 Co-Chair Martin Sirois (Canada) then closed the preparatory segment by forwarding the draft decision on energy efficiency to the High-Level Segment for adoption.

Delegates heard the reports of the assessment panels, and considered the report from the Executive Committee of the Multilateral Fund (MLF).

The High-Level Segment then adopted all 18 decisions forwarded to it by the preparatory segment, including on issues relating to compliance and reporting, gaps in monitoring, the replenishment of the MLF, energy efficiency, and the membership of Montreal Protocol bodies. They agreed that the next MOP would meet from 31 October – 4 November 2022 in Nairobi, Kenya.

With no other matters to consider, MOP 33 President Sawadogo closed COP 12(II)/MOP 33 at 5:52 PM East Africa Time.

COP 12(II)/MOP 32 met online (due to the COVID-19 pandemic) from 23-29 October 2021, from 2:00 – 4:00 PM East Africa Time.
