IISD RS will be providing coverage of the 4th Regional 3R Forum in Asia, which focuses on waste minimization, reuse and recycling issues.
The 4th Regional 3R Forum will address 3R practices in a wide range of development sectors, including agriculture, industry and energy. Participants, including Pacific Island Countries, will consider new and emerging waste streams, such as electronic waste, healthcare waste, plastics in the coastal/marine environment, construction and demolition waste, and household hazardous waste. Issues for small island developing states, such as lack of landfill space, contamination of scarce water supply, potential damage to marine ecosystems, and plastics in coastal and marine environments will also be discussed.
The meeting builds on the outcomes of the three previous regional 3R forums held regularly in Asia since 2009, and will address how 3R can contribute towards the implementation of commitments from the Rio+20 summit in June 2012. In particular, it will consider what policies, infrastructure and technologies are needed to achieve resource efficiency and a “zero waste” society.
The Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment, Vietnam, the Ministry of Environment, Japan, and the UN Centre for Regional Development (UNCRD) are jointly organizing the event, which will promote opportunities for collaborative actions and partnerships.
