GC-25/GMEF Adopts Historic Decision on Mercury

On Friday, 20 February, delegates met in the Committee of the Whole (COW) in the morning to consider draft decisions. In the afternoon, delegates convened in closing plenary, where they heard the President's Summary on the outcome of the ministerial consultations, adopted the report of the COW as well as 17 decisions including on mercury, IEG, programme of work and budget and support to Africa. Delegates thanked the Government of Kenya, the GC President, and the UNEP Secretariat for creating an environment conducive for a successful meeting. GC President Dulic gaveled the meeting to a close at 4:29 pm.

CLOSING PLENARY:

Nobel Laureate Wangari Maathai addressing the closing plenary.
Nobel Laureate Wangari Maathai urged delegates to become soldiers for the environment. UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner reminded delegates that "it is the youth of the world whom we ultimately serve." Jan Dusik (Czech Republic), on behalf of the EU, declared GC25 "an important milestone" in the history of environmental protection.

Archbishop Alain Paul Lebeaupin, Holy See, stressed that it is not enough just to seek a green economy, it must be a green human economy. Olabode Adekeye, Nigeria, on behalf of the G-77/China noted the successful outcomes of this session of the Governing Council. Ghafur Dharmaputra, Indonesia, said the Ministerial consultations set a good example for future GC's.

Daniel Fantozzi, US, said the GC25 was an excellent example of what the UN can do. GC President Oliver Dulić gaveled the meeting to a close at 4:29pm.
COMMITTEE OF THE WHOLE:

Chair Uosukainen thanked the Chairs of various working and drafting groups for facilitating the negotiations.

Delegates congratulated Chair Uosukainen on the successful conclusion of the  COW.
