In 2017, half the population in mountainous areas faced food insecurity—and that was before the pandemic. This HLPF side event heard that building back better will require rethinking economic growth, with responsible production and consumption patterns.

This event addressed the High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development 2021 theme of sustainable and resilient recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic towards achieving the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development by contributing to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 1 (no poverty), 2 (zero hunger), SDG 3 (good health and well-being), 8 (decent work and economic growth), 10 (reduced inequalities), 11 (responsible consumption and production), 13 (climate action), and 17 (partnerships for the Goals). It was organized by the Permanent Mission of the Kyrgyz Republic to the UN, in partnership with the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic and the Mountain Partnership,
The objectives of the event included:
- advocacy for policies supporting food security, poverty reduction and sustainable food systems in mountains through recognizing their global importance for biodiversity conservation;
- launching the new publication of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO), “Mountain farming systems – seeds for the future of agroecology in mountains”;
- information-sharing on initiatives related to innovation and diversification of mountain livelihoods, particularly for women and youth in rural areas; and
- exploring how to promote innovative collaboration with the private sector to increase funding for achieving the SDGs and addressing the COVID-19 crisis and its aftermath in mountains.
The meeting consisted of statements by several government and intergovernmental representatives, followed by a panel discussion. The panel considered such topics as: promoting the role of women for sustainable food systems in mountains; engaging mountain producers for building forward better; and mountain tourism as a mechanism for promoting a resilient recovery. A video featuring collaboration between fashion designer Stella Jean and a women’s artisan group in Barskoon, Kyrgyzstan, was also shown.
