The UN Alliance for Sustainable Fashion hosted a virtual side event on sustainable fashion on 7 July 2021, on the sidelines of the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development 2021. It focused on the Alliance’s first-ever attempt to map out the UN System’s response to social and environmental problems related to the fashion industry.
Through a mix of panel discussion and a presentation of the Alliance’s mapping exercise, the side event contributed to the creation of a knowledge base to improve coordination between UN bodies as well as promote projects and policies that ensure the fashion value chain contributes to achieving the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) targets.
The objectives of this event included: raising awareness about the link between the SDGs, UN agencies, and fashion; showcasing concrete solutions for stakeholders; and addressing challenges of building back better following the COVID-19 pandemic. The event also aimed to provide guidance and recommendations for member States on ways to move the fashion industry to a more sustainable path.
The Earth Negotiations Bulletin (ENB) provided digital coverage of this event on Wednesday, 7 July 2021.
