This event showcased the ways in which islands are coming together through the Local2030 Island Network to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) during the Decade of Action, despite the current challenges faced due to the COVID-19 pandemic and climate change impacts.
The event followed a series of webinars presented throughout 2020 by the Local2030 Islands Network that focused on building back better in the context of COVID-19 and shared island solutions, experiences, and approaches between island peers. The event featured solutions and examples from the webinar series related to food security (SDG 2), economic resilience and recovery (SDG 8), youth engagement in recovery (SDG 10 and 17), building climate resilience for COVID-19 recovery (SDG 13), and the public-private partnerships and effective institutions in islands that can support recovery (SDG 16 and 17) all in the context of SDG implementation.
In the first panel of the event, Micronesia Challenge Leaders discussed their engagement with the Local2030 Islands Network and progress made on building a sustainable future, despite the challenges of COVID-19 and climate change.
In the second panel, panelists discussed the contribution of islands to climate action and sustainable development solutions, as well as island potential and resiliency in the context of COVID-19.
Ireland is hosting the event on behalf of the Local2030 Islands Network.
