Delegates at the ICPD+5 PrepCom met in a morning Plenary to hear official statements on preparations for the Special Session. The Working Group completed its first read-through of the draft working paper containing proposals for action for further POA implementation. CPD-32 reconvened to adopt its resolutions and final report.

Delegates made formal statements on preparations
for the Special Session in the morning Plenary

Commission on the Status of Women Chair Patricia Flor (Germany) spoke
of linkages between Beijing and Cairo, drew attention to the results of
the recent CSW meeting, noting that the report on women and health would
be adopted on April 1, and looked forward to the PrepCom's results in
order to integrate the outcomes into the CSW's own preparations for the
5 year review of Beijing |

Fiji,
speaking on behalf of the Pacific Island Countries, highlighted the
unique conditions and particular concerns of Pacific Island Countries with
respect to population dynamics, for example |

Vanita
Nayak Mykherjee (India), speaking on behalf of the Women's Coalition
for ICPD, a coalition of 68 NGOs, stressed that sexual and reproductive
rights is a human rights issue |

UNICEF said that HIV threatens ICPD achievements and called for quantifiable
timetables and targets to prevent the spread of AIDS, highlighted obstacles
with improving the health and welfare of women and girls, commended UNFPA
for leading the process of reviewing the ICPD Programme of Action and reaffirmed
UNICEF's commitment to accomplishing the goals and objectives achieved at
Cairo |
