Jean-Christophe Vandevelde (Dr.)

Jean-Christophe Vandevelde is a writer with IISD as well as an officer at the Pew Charitable Trusts, working on international fisheries policy. With IISD since 2017, he mostly covers biodiversity and ocean-related processes.

Jean-Christophe Vandevelde specializes in biodiversity impact assessment methods and biodiversity conservation policies. Between 2013 and 2015, he worked as scientific secretary of the IPBES French National Committee. Previously, he was a biodiversity officer for the French railway manager, where he worked on mitigating the negative effects and increasing the positive effects of the railway network on biodiversity. Jean-Christophe Vandevelde also worked for a coalition of environmental NGOs advocating for changes in consumption patterns, focusing especially on the role of advertising in (un)sustainable consumption.

Jean-Christophe Vandevelde holds a Ph.D in Geography and Environmental Planning from the University of Orléans, France, and a Master’s in International Development from the University of Louvain, Belgium. He speaks French, English and Spanish.
