On Saturday, the plenary of the CBD Working Group on Article 8(j) heard a report of Friday’s deliberations in the Friends of the Chair group on future work, and participated in an in-depth dialogue on the contribution of traditional knowledge of indigenous peoples and local communities to the implementation of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda with special emphasis on the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. The Working Group adopted six recommendations and the meeting report. CBD Executive Secretary Paşca Palmer considered the participation of indigenous peoples and local communities in the Convention critical for assessing implementation on the ground and for developing new arrangements to save biodiversity globally. Working Group Co-chair Ochoa, Mexico on behalf of COP 13 Presidency, stated that the guidelines on traditional knowledge repatriation and the glossary will help develop a common approach across the Convention; and gaveled the meeting to a close at 1:19 pm. On Friday morning, the plenary of Article 8(j) Working Group finalized: the draft guidelines on the repatriation of traditional knowledge; and draft recommendations on resource mobilization, the glossary, and on the recommendations from the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII). Plenary also discussed proposed topics for future in-depth dialogues. In the afternoon, a contact group met to discuss future work, on the basis of progress towards Aichi Target 18 (traditional knowledge), implementation of the customary sustainable use action plan, the integration of Article 8(j) in the work of the CBD and its Protocols, and the finalization of tasks 7, 10 and 12 under the Article 8(j) work programme. On Thursday morning, the Working Group on Article 8(j) considered: resource mobilization; progress towards Aichi Target 18 (traditional knowledge), implementation of the customary sustainable use action plan, and integration of Article 8(j) in the work of the CBD and its Protocols; finalization of tasks 7, 10 and 12 under the Article 8(j) work programme; recommendations from the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII); and a draft recommendation on the glossary. In the evening, the Article 8(j) Working Group’s contact group on the draft guidelines on the repatriation of traditional knowledge convened. In the afternoon, SBSTTA plenary addressed a draft recommendation on mainstreaming biodiversity and adopted all recommendations, closing at 6:29 pm. On Wednesday morning, the tenth meeting of the CBD Working Group on Article 8(j) opened with a Mohawk prayer. Delegates considered the draft Rutzolijirisaxik voluntary guidelines for the repatriation of traditional knowledge of indigenous peoples and local communities (IPLCs) relevant for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity; and the glossary of relevant terms and concepts within the context of CBD Article 8(j) and related provisions. In the afternoon and evening, SBSTTA plenary addressed draft recommendations on: scenarios for the 2050 vision; new and emerging issues; health and biodiversity; the fifth edition of the Global Biodiversity Outlook (GBO 5); and sustainable wild meat.
