Richard W. Butler, Australia's Permanent Representative to the
United Nations since 1992, is a Vice-Chairman of the Preparatory
Committee for the World Summit for Social Development. Ambassador
Butler, an economist and career diplomat, is also 1994 President of
the Economic and Social Council, and Chairman of the Preparatory
Committee for the 50th Anniversary of the United Nations. He began
his public service career with the Australian Atomic Energy
Commission, and most recently served as his country's Ambassador to
Thailand and Cambodia.

Zbigniew M. Wlosowicz, Poland's Permanent Representative to
the United Nations since 1993, is a Vice-President of the
Preparatory Committee for the World Summit for Social Development.
A scholar specializing in international law, Ambassador Wlosowicz
has held a number of positions at the United Nations, including
Vice-Chairman of the Preparatory Committee for the Fiftieth
Anniversary of the United Nations, and Vice-Chairman of the Special
Political Committee of the forty-seventh session of the General
Assembly. He joined the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1990,
following political changes in Poland.

Aivars Baumanis, Latvia's Permanent Representative to the
United Nations since 1991, is a Vice-Chairman of the Preparatory
Committee for the World Summit for Social Development. Ambassador
Baumanis entered Government service as head of the Political
Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs after a career that
began in police investigative work in 1961. He was later a reporter
and editor in newspapers, magazines, and radio, and served as
Director of both the Latvian Telegraph Agency and the Latvian
Branch of the Novosti Press Agency.

Ismat T. Kittani of Iraq, Chairman of the Steering Committee
for the World Summit for Social Development, coordinates
preparations for the Summit by the United Nations system. Mr.
Kittani, Special Adviser to Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali, has
had a long association with the United Nations; in 1981,
he became the first former delegate and member of the Secretariat
to be elected General Assembly President.

Mohammad Hamid Ansari, India's Permanent Representative to the
United Nations, is a Vice-Chairman of the Preparatory Committee for
the World Summit for Social Development. A career diplomat with
academic degrees in political science, Ambassador Ansari was
previously his country's envoy to Afghanistan, the United Arab
Emirates, and High Commissioner to Australia. He was previously
India's Chief of Protocol, and served in Iraq, Morocco, and Saudi
Arabia before being appointed First Secretary and Counsellor in the
Indian Mission to the European Economic Community.

Nitin D. Desai of India, who became the United Nations' first
Under-Secretary General for Policy Coordination and Sustainable
Development in 1993, heads the Secretariat team for the World
Summit for Social Development. A member of the Steering Committee
for the Summit, Mr. Desai was previously Deputy Secretary-General
of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and
Development, and Senior Economic Adviser to the 1987 World
Commission on Environment and Development.

Nafis Sadik of Pakistan, Secretary-General of the 1994 United
Nations Conference on Population and Development, is a member of
the Steering Committee for the World Summit for Social Development.
Dr. Sadik, a physician who received her training in Pakistan and
the United States, has been Executive Director of the United
Nations Population Fund since 1987. She is the first woman to head
a major U.N. agency.
