Energy
for Sustainable Development: a regional approach
Organized
by United Nations Environment Programme |
|
Daniel
Bouille, Bariloche Foundation, Argentina; M. Reza Salamat, Iran; Anita
Bundegaard, Minister of Development Cooperation, Denmark; UNEP Executive
Director Klaus Töpfer; Syda Bbumba, Minister of Energy and Mineral
Development, Uganda; and Roy Hamme, Duke Energy, USA. |
Klaus Töpfer,
UNEP Executive Director, opened this side event stating his encouragement
for renewable energy development to continue on a networking path of decentralization.
Speakers described their national interests in supporting regional collaboration
for energy resource efficiency. Mohammed Reza Salamat related that in
his work as Co-Chair of the Ad Hoc Energy Experts group, there are good
intentions for cooperation at the regional level, citing that the text
relating to regional cooperation is one of the few texts which have been
fully agreed and adopted by delegates, while the text on international
cooperation is entirely bracketed. In listing Uganda's experience in promoting
efficient energy use, maintenance and expansion of power supply, and energy
consumption, Syda Bbumba highlighted that the development of renewable
energy sources in Africa (such as hydro power) can only be accomplished
in a regional development plan.

The
Integrated Global Observing Strategy Partnership: Focus on Oceans,
Carbon Cycle, Water Cycle, Water Cycle
Sponsored by the Integrated Global Observing Strategy (IGOS), an
international partnership of agencies concerned with global environmental
issues, research, and provision of Earth observationsration
|
|
Many
of the various environmental initiatives and treaties implemented
over the last few decades call for systematic observations of the
Earth, and the IGOS Partnership is prepared to provide the necessary
observational links in support of such international initiatives.
The Partnership has deployed considerable effort to improve awareness
among the international environmental Conventions of the IGOS Partnership
activities, including the information that can be provided through
this relatively novel cooperation among organizations that previously
were not as closely linked.
