At the beginning of the afternoon meeting, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon addressed the session, and announced his decision to designate Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs Sha Zukang as Secretary-General of the 2012 UN Conference on Sustainable Development. CSD 18 concluded at 5:09 pm, upon which CSD 19 immediately convened to elect its Chair: László Borbély, Minister of Environment and Forests, Romania. The High-Level Segment of CSD 18 opened during the morning, and two ministerial roundtables convened in the afternoon to address sustainable consumption and production and mining.

Delegates to CSD 18 participated in SIDS Day on Monday, 10 May, during which they considered the CSD 18 thematic topics as they relate to small island developing States (SIDS), and conducted a review of the implementation of the Mauritius Strategy for the Implementation (MSI) of the Barbados Plan of Action for the Sustainable Development of Small Island States. This discussion served as the Preparatory Committee for the five-year review of implementation of the MSI (PrepCom for MSI+5). Delegates also received a draft of the Chair’s Summary (Part I) during the morning.

On Thursday, delegates to CSD 18 completed their review of mining and waste management issues during morning sessions, and began their review of sustainable consumption and production during an afternoon session. A well-attended lunchtime briefing on preparations for the Rio 2012 Conference discussed the outcome of recent Bureau meetings and the organization of work for the 17-19 May 2010 PrepCom.
