This High-Level Breakfast, which was organized by the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), took place on 16 November 2017 at the Marriott Hotel in Bonn, Germany, on the margins of the 23rd session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 23) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The event aimed to encourage invited guests to champion actions that achieve multiple outcomes at the national, regional and global levels, particularly on poverty eradication, climate change, disaster risk reduction, land degradation and desertification, and biodiversity goals, by acting to conserve, sustainably use and restore biodiversity and ecosystems.

Luc Gnacadja, Special Representative of the Local Climate Adaptive Living Facility (LoCAL) programme board, moderated the session

 

Cristiana Paşca Palmer, Executive Secretary, CBD, observed that well thought out action to mitigate and adapt to climate change, conserve biodiversity and address land degradation will lead to multiple benefits in multiple sectors.

Tommy Remengesau, President of Palau, stressed that biodiversity conservation has to be a critical component of national efforts by small islands developing states.

Nicolas Hulot, Minister for the Ecological and Inclusive Transition, France, said that “if we want to keep global warming to below 1.5°C, the only solution is to restore all ecosystems.”

Jan Szyszko, Minister of Environment, Poland, outlined plans and preparations for COP 24.

Edna Molewa, Minister of Environmental Affairs, South Africa, underscored the need to ensure that biodiversity is at the helm of all activities.

 

Yasuo Takahashi, Vice Minister, Global Environmental Affairs, Japan, noted that climate change and biodiversity mainstreaming were addressed by the Aichi Biodiversity Targets.

Khaled Mohamed Fahmy Abdel Aal, Minister of Environment, Egypt, called for linking the economy to biodiversity, desertification and climate change.

Gou Haibo, Special Representative for Climate Change Negotiations, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, China

Elsa Galarza, Minister of Environment, Peru, advocated a for a "territorial approach" and developing new strategies for biodiversity conservation involving all sectors.

Enrique Lendo Fuentes, Mexico, highlighted the need to engage people on the fact that profits and sustainability are not mutually exclusive.

Jean Kapata, Minister of Minister for Lands, Territory, Natural Resources and Environmental Protection, Zambia, informed the breakfast of an initiative to plant a million trees.

Sergio Bergman, Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development, Argentina, offered to introduce biodiversity onto the agenda of the G20 meeting that Argentina will be hosting in 2018.

Vincent Biruta, Minister of Environment, Rwanda, explained that two million hectares had been set aside for the Bonn Challenge and 30% of land area dedicated as forest cover.
