On Friday, AWG-LCA contact groups were held on mitigation, technology and finance, and adaptation. The AWG-KP convened contact groups on Annex I emission reductions and legal matters, and held various informal consultations.

Chair Kolly invited parties' comments on matching adaptation actions with financial, technological and capacity building support. He proposed focusing on the scope of actions to be supported, additionality and criteria for prioritizing support. |

Tai Soo Chew, Singapore (left photo),
opposed the introduction of new criteria, such as GDP, for differentiating countries.
Akihiko Furuya, Japan (right photo), stressed that his country cannot accept a simple extension of the Kyoto Protocol, without participation of Protocol non-parties and major developing countries.

Aysar Tayeb, Saudi Arabia (left photo), and Bernaditas Muller, G-77/China (right photo). Saudi Arabia opposed differentiating among developing countries and the reference to more advanced ones. The Philippines, on behalf of the G-77/China, expressed concern with the concept of a registry. |

AWG-LCA contact group on delivering finance and technology |
The contact group met in morning and afternoon sessions, focusing on technology. The main issues discussed included: research and development; technology cooperation; intellectual property rights; the need for comprehensive technology plans; how to involve the private sector; whether the Convention's role should be catalytic or involve more direct action; and financial and institutional arrangements.
