The first meeting of the Open-Ended Legal and Technical Working Group (OELTWG) of the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM) convened for its third day, on 23 October 2008, at FAO headquarters, in Rome, Italy.

Delegates held informal discussions on preparations for the second meeting of the International Conference on Chemicals Management (ICCM-2) and elected two co-chairs, Babajide Alo (Nigeria) and Kateřina Šepková (Romania), to preside over the informal discussions.

During the morning delegates considered modalities for reporting on the implementation of SAICM and considered possibilities for new additions to the SAICM Global Plan of Action.

During the afternoon delegates turned their attention to the consideration of financial and technical resources for the implementation of SAICM, including the evaluation of the performance of the financing of SAICM, as well as emerging policy issues.

The contact groups on the bureau and subsidiary bodies, and on the rules of procedure related to participants, accreditation/credentials and decision-making convened at lunchtime and during the evening.
Liu Guozhi (China) highlighted the need to evaluate the implementation of SAICM.
Michael Gribble, International Council of Chemicals Associations, pledged the chemical industry's commitment to improving chemicals management in the field of technical innovation.
Craig Boljkovac, UNITAR, expressed support for the Canadian initiative on modalities for reporting.
