Delegates to SBSTTA 14 met in plenary in the morning to hear opening remarks and a keynote presentation on the third editon of the Global Biodiversity Outlook (GBO 3), and address organizational matters.

Two Working Groups met throughout the day to start discussions on in-depth reviews of implementation of programmes of work on: mountain biodiversity, inland waters, and marine and coastal biodiversity (Working Group I); biodiversity and climate change, and Article 10 on sustainable use (Working Group II).

Opening Plenary

Ahmed Djoghlaf, Executive Secretary, Convention on Biological Diversity, emphasized the importance of SBSTTA’s contribution to the new strategic plan.

Achim Steiner, Executive Director, UN Environment Programme, highlighted the need to: communicate progress achieved, frame policy options in economic terms, and enhance synergies between multilateral environmental agreements.

Amb. Spencer Linus Thomas (Grenada), Chair of CBD SBSTTA, urged delegates to set new ambitious targets and send a clear message to high-level meetings.

Thomas Lovejoy, Heinz Centre for Science, Economics and the Environment, gave the keynote presentation on the key findings of the the third edition of the Global Biodiversity Outlook (GBO 3).

Side Event: Santoyama Initiative

Dennis Garrity, Director General, World Agroforestry Center, presented a proposal to launch an International Partnership to support the implementation of the Initiative.
