Friday, 21 May

On Friday, delegates met in an early plenary to complete discussions on a draft recommendation on ways and means to improve SBSTTA effectiveness. Working Group I also met in the morning to conclude negotiations on a draft recommendation on biofuels.

Following a brief resumption of Working Groups I and II in the afternoon, to adopt their respective reports, the final plenary convened to adopt all remaining recommendations. The meeting was gaveled to a close at 6:38 pm.

The contact group on biofuels met in the morning. Working Group II also met in the morning to complete discussions on post-2010 goals and targets.

Working Group I met throughout the day and in the evening to continue discussions on biofuels. Plenary resumed in the evening to address draft recommendations on ways and means to improve SBSTTA’s effectiveness, and new and emerging issues.

Plenary resumed in the morning to address ways and means to improve SBSTTA’s effectiveness, and new and emerging issues.

Working Group I met in the morning and afternoon, to discuss draft recommendations on dry and sub-humid lands, agricultural biodiversity, and invasive alien species. Working Group II met in the afternoon to discuss draft recommendations on post-2010 goals and targets and on the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation.

The contact group on biofuels met at lunchtime and in the evening.

On Tuesday, Working Group I concluded initial discussions on invasive alien species, and addressed a draft recommendation on agricultural biodiversity.

Working Group II concluded initial discussions on incentives, and addressed draft recommendations on GBO 3, the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation, incentives and post-2010 goals and targets.

A contact group met in the evening to discuss bracketed text in a draft recommendation on biofuels.

On Monday, Working Group I started discussions on agricultural biodiversity, including biofuels, dry and sub-humid lands, and invasive alien species (IAS). Working Group II considered the messages and implications of GBO 3, outcome-oriented goals and targets for the period beyond 2010, the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation, and incentives.

On Friday morning, Working Group I completed discussions on the draft recommendation on forest biodiversity, and Working Group II on protected areas.

A contact group to address outstanding issues in the draft recommendation on climate change met in the morning. In the afternoon, Working Group II completed discussions on the draft recommendation on climate change.

Plenary resumed in the evening and adopted eight recommendations.

Thursday, 13 May

Working Groups I and II met throughout the day and into the night.

Working Group I discussed draft recommendations on forest and marine and coastal biodiversity, and Working Group II on climate change, sustainable use, protected areas and the Global Taxonomy Initiative.

A joint drafting group was established to consider REDD and geo-engineering as cross-cutting pending items for the draft recommendations on forest, protected areas, climate change and marine biodiversity, which met at lunchtime.

A Friends of the Co-chairs’ group discussed the proposed joint work programme between the Rio Conventions in the afternoon, and a contact group met to discuss pending issues on sustainable use at lunchtime.

On Wednesday, delegates to SBSTTA 14 discussed draft recommendations on inland water biodiversity, forest biodiversity and marine and coastal biodiversity in Working Group I.

Working Group II addressed a draft recommendation on biodiversity and climate change and established a contact group to address outstanding issues. The contact group met in the evening and into the night.

On Tuesday, delegates to SBSTTA 14 discussed forest biodiversity, including a joint work plan with the UN Forum on Forests (UNFF), and a draft recommendation on mountain biodiversity in Working Group I.

Working Group II addressed the in-depth review of the implementation of the programme of work on protected areas (PAs) and the Global Taxonomy Initiative (GTI).

Delegates to SBSTTA 14 met in plenary in the morning to hear opening remarks and a keynote presentation on the third editon of the Global Biodiversity Outlook (GBO 3), and address organizational matters.

Two Working Groups met throughout the day to start discussions on in-depth reviews of implementation of programmes of work on: mountain biodiversity, inland waters, and marine and coastal biodiversity (Working Group I); biodiversity and climate change, and Article 10 on sustainable use (Working Group II).

Ahmed Djoghlaf, Executive Secretary, Convention on Biological Diversity, emphasized the importance of SBSTTA’s contribution to the new strategic plan.
Achim Steiner, Executive Director, UN Environment Programme, highlighted the need to: communicate progress achieved, frame policy options in economic terms, and enhance synergies between multilateral environmental agreements.

Amb. Spencer Linus Thomas (Grenada), Chair of CBD SBSTTA, urged delegates to set new ambitious targets and send a clear message to high-level meetings.
