Expert workshop on enhancing biodiversity data and observing systems in support of the implementation of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020

 The Expert workshop on enhancing biodiversity data and observing systems in support of the implementation of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020 will discuss ways in which collection of, access to, and use of biodiversity data and observations could be enhanced to support evidence-based decision making and planning with a view to achieving the Aichi Biodiversity Targets and corresponding national targets. The workshop, co-organized by the Group on Earth Observations Biodiversity Observation Network (GEO BON) and the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), aims to foster a dialogue between governments, organizations and the observation community to learn from experiences with biodiversity observation systems and to start new initiatives. The specific goals of the workshop are to address ways to improve collection, use and reporting of observation information by Parties and raise awareness of available tools, products and services provided by organizations, such as GEO BON. Participants will discuss national needs and experiences as well as specific approaches, such as remote sensing, in situ monitoring, crowd sourcing and citizen science, and global tools and products. The outcomes of the workshop will be reported to the seventeenth meeting of the CBD’s Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA 17), to be held 14-18 October in Montreal (IISD RS coverage of SBSTTA 17).
