The Third ASEAN Conference on Biodiversity will convene in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from 16-20 March on the theme of “Towards 2050: Living in Harmony with Nature.”
The Government of Malaysia, through its Ministry of Land, Water, and Natural Resources (KATS), is hosting the conference in partnership with the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity (ACB) and several multilateral organizations.
It is expected that the conference will make a regional contribution to current negotiations around the post-2020 global biodiversity framework, ahead of the 15th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP-25) in China in October 2020.
The conference will take stock of progress toward policy goals, focusing on:
- the post-2020 global biodiversity framework;
- transformational change and sustainability;
- mainstreaming biodiversity in development;
- innovations in biodiversity conservation;
- global and regional assessments by the Intergovernmental Panel on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) and the fifth edition of the Global Biodiversity Outlook (GBO-5); and
- sustainable wildlife conservation and management.
There will be plenary sessions on these topics, parallel thematic sessions, and several forums devoted to business and biodiversity, science and policy, the role of youth, and sustainable industries. The Sustainable Industries Forum will discuss sustainable palm oil in the region, as well as conservation and sustainability measures in other industries.
From 19-20 March, an ASEAN high-level meeting on biodiversity will convene to discuss and promote members’ common interests in biodiversity conservation, sustainable use, and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits from the utilization of biodiversity. The meeting will include members of the Group of Like-Minded Megadiverse Countries (LMMC).
