Forest Ecosystem Restoration Initiative (FERI): Taking forward a decade of ecosystem recovery
Forests provide 80% of the world’s terrestrial biodiversity; yet each year over 10 million hectares of forests are lost to deforestation. The Forest Ecosystem Restoration Initiative (FERI), a collaborative project supported by the Korea Forest Service and the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), is working to help countries achieve key biodiversity targets related to ecosystem restoration, habitat conservation, and forest rehabilitation through technical support, capacity building, and funding. This event featured successes and challenges associated with forest restoration, including current and future collaborative initiatives.
Ecosystem Resilience in Focus: Developing Science-based Approaches for Coral and Biodiversity
Achieving the goals and targets of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) will require multi-stakeholder engagement and creative solutions. Focusing on coral reef conservation and restoration, presenters during this event explored the role of multi-sectoral partnerships in leveraging science and technology to reduce biodiversity loss and foster resilient ecosystems, while making data, technology, and research capacity easily shareable and accessible to all interested stakeholders.
Energy Transition and Biodiversity: Safeguarding Andean Wetlands
The “lithium triangle” is the area where Chile, Argentina, and Bolivia hold much of the world’s lithium. The race toward an energy transition, including lithium extraction, is placing Andean Wetlands at risk. This event asked attendees to look beyond the promise of energy transition and consider potential negative impacts of lithium mining in the region.
SOI Global Dialogue with Regional Seas Organizations and Regional Fishery Bodies
This event featured reports on progress made through the Sustainable Ocean Initiative (SOI) Global Dialogue, launched in 2016, and highlighted the importance of cooperation and collaboration among regional bodies for achieving global goals and targets.
Global Sustainable Development Report 2023 Regional Dissemination Workshop
The GSDR compiles scientific and other evidence on transformations and provides a framework for assessing, managing, and accelerating transformations that can inform the development of national plans for integrated SDG implementation and monitoring. A recent workshop aimed to deepen knowledge of the GSDR's applicability in the Asia and Pacific region.
10th Session of the Meeting of the Parties to the Water Convention (MOP 10)
The meeting reaffirmed the fundamental role of transboundary water cooperation for peace and sustainable development. Delegates adopted a Programme of Work and budget 2025-2027, and another 24 decisions, including on "source-to-sea" governance.
NBSAP Day: From target setting to accelerated implementation
Against a backdrop of urgent calls for action to halt and reverse biodiversity loss, more than 300 stakeholders participated in a day-long event on advancing implementation of National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs). The day included presentations, interactive dialogues, and roundtables, with an emphasis on shared experiences and active engagement.
9th Session of the Africa Regional Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (AfRP-9)
With an emphasis on early warning systems and early action, the meeting focused on issues critical for enhancing Africa’s disaster preparedness, including: applying risk information for transformative governance; investing to reduce risk, by changing the way money is spent; and reducing loss and damage, by saving lives and protecting investments.
