High-Level Meeting on African Agriculture
in the 21st Century

9-10 February 2009 | Windhoek, Namibia

UNDESA - Division for Sustainable Development

On Tuesday, 10 February 2009, delegates reconvened to discuss issues surrounding the integration of African agriculture higher up the value chain; the integration of small farmers into the global supply chain; and managing Africa’s agricultural transition. Delegates also adopted the Windhoek High-Level Ministerial Declaration on African Agriculture in the 21st Century.

Delegates noted the need to increase productivity, coordinate activities between the public and private sectors, and formulate national policies for agriculture. They stressed the dissemination of experiences amongst small farmholders, an increased understanding of constraints, and crop diversification.

The Windhoek High-Level Ministerial Declaration noted a number of recommendations for consideration by CSD 17, including an increase in financial support for agriculture on the continent; the empowerment of women farmers; the availability of credit and other financial services to farmers; and increased North-South and South-South cooperation. The meeting ended on Tuesday afternoon.
